Alanis Morissette Biography: In 1974 the most amazing gift was born to (later) intrigue, astound, bless the world with her talents; Alanis Morissette. Born and nurtured in her homeland of Ottawa, Canada she loved music and by the age of 10 she made her acting debut on You Can't Do That On Television. But since music was her passion she took money that she made from that show to record her first song, and independently recorded single, "Fate Stay With Me" which was released the same year. When Alanis left the show she directed her goals on her passion of music. Later at 14 she got her first musical publishing contract which shortly thereafter fallowed a recording contract. In 1991 she relocated to Toronto, Canada and broke into Canadian Pop Stardom (similar to Debbie Gibson's status in America) with her self titled album "Alanis". Her album sold over 100,000 copies. And Alanis was honoured with a Juno Award (equal to the status of a Grammy in America) for most promising female artist.
In 1992, Alanis went on to produce her next album "Now is the Time" a more personal record for the time. Alanis' follow up album didn't fair as well, selling half as many copies, as her Canadian debut. Shortly thereafter Alanis, looking for a new start, took a chance and moved to Los Angeles, California to meet the man whom she would soon find to be her spiritual brother, Glen Ballard, in 1994. Glen Ballard was a driving force behind Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror", and other artists like Wilson Philips. Alanis Morissette (it was not even about making a record in the beginning, it was just about writing her music in the most pure, raw, and honest form ever), in which resulted in music with an edge. Madonna's Record Label "Maverick" noticed the talent and signed Alanis' American Debut (Pop, Rock, Alternative) Album "Jagged Little Pill" which was deeply autobiographical. The Album was recorded more than 80 percent from the demo, resulting in the pure raw form of honest expression. Alanis took a leap of faith letting her truth all out. And multi-millions of people world wide accepted her with open arms. All of this Resulting in Alanis Morissette washing over the World with the force, fury, and wonder of a shower of Meteorites. Her "Jagged Little Pill" creation shot up the Radio Charts and stayed there and amazing 113 weeks, has sold in excess of 30 million copies, produced 6 radio megahits and received 4 Grammy Awards.
After Alanis' Exhausting Jagged Little Pill Tour, she decided to abandon ship. She was so physically and emotionally drained she was ready to never make another record and never write again. It saddened her as well, because she wanted to create. As a result Alanis took a break and vowed to not to Tour, Write, or Record for a year or more. And in January of 1998 she travelled to India, and she was able to be completely anonymous and just be herself, which was very big for her. It was around that point that she had made peace with her past, her fame, and her friends. Yet all of her fans were growing restless it had been over 2 years since Alanis had released any new music. But it wasn't until February of 1998 on her tour to Cuba when she realized that it was time to write again. So right after, she wrote the City of Angel's monster hit "Uninvited" and it resonated loud with fans. Henceforth the result was "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie." This album, like Jagged Little Pill, also profoundly autobiographical, but she was sharing her peace instead of her pain. And that was a big step forward for her, to write an album that was not blatantly from a place of pain and suffering. Understandably, not every one of Alanis's fans were open to her change of heart and her new style. Regardless Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie still produced 4 radio hits, and the song "Thank U" was the Albums wings and it soared to #1 status on the Top 40 countdowns. Alanis' world tour also helped keep her on the charts.
Also, helping keep herself out there in the public eye was her appearances and performances on VH1's Behind The Music, MTV's "Alanis Morissette Unplugged". In which she unveiled three never before recorded songs, and was soon after released as a record. Alanis also did another special on VH1's StoryTellers in which she also performed her old hits and her newer hits. This was also where people got a special sneak peak of her new single for the Dogma Sountrack "Still". Which also got her more airplay on the radio. In the movie Dogma she made a cameo appearance as God, in a comedic film which mocked the religions, specifically Catholicism, also starring other famous personalities such as the comedian Chris Rock, and the actors Matt Damon and Ben Afleck.
Well after all her successes and being one of the biggest selling female artists of the 90's Alanis continues to bless us with all of her creative talents. She also took it upon herself to explore more acting by performing on Broadway-hit "The Vagina Monologues" for two weeks. Coming out later this year a new record. One thing seems for sure Alanis will always pour all of her self into her creative projects, because she has repeatedly proved to do so previously with her raw honesty that has connected with millions of people worldwide.
